Sunray Healthcare Center continues to have transmission with positive residents and staff. The most recent positive case was on 2/1/22 for a resident. Indoor visitations are limited at this time. Please coordinate with the facility’s Activity Director. Communal dining and activities remain on hold.

Please be patient with us as we tighten up our restrictions to ensure a safe environment for our patients and staff.

We will keep you updated as things progress. We will continue to test staff and residents per CDC and Public Health guidelines. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Charles Onyeke, Director of Nursing, or Jackie Sykes, Infection Preventionist at the facility.

December 2021

December 27, 2021

Firstly, On December 3rd, 2021, the Los Angeles County Health Officer issued an Order that mandated increased testing for all residents, employees and contractors, regardless of vaccination status. In addition, the order states. “In addition, to obtain entry into a Skilled Nursing Facility, all visitors, regardless of vaccinations status, must provide proof of either:

  1. A negative PCR test taken within 72 hours prior to entry, OR
  2. A negative Antigen test taken within 24 hours prior to entry. Antigen test kits will be made available to Skilled Nursing Facilities on an as needed basis.”

Due to increased testing of those in the facility and the visitors:

  1. We received results yesterday that two (2) Staff tested positive over the past 2 days.
  2. We found one family member to be positive when we tested them prior to entry. Because of that protocol, we avoided the possible spread of the virus.

No Residents have been found positive at this time. We are currently testing twice a week.

With this knowledge, the leadership at Sunray recommends the following.

  1. As difficult as it may be, please limit in-house visitation from now through January. We still allow window visits with the window closed, as well as scheduling virtual visits through several apps.
  2. If you do plan to come to the facility, we recommend taking the PCR test rather than the rapid test we provide at the facility. While the Antigen has been proven to detect Covid-19. the PCR Test is more reliable.

We do not take the threat of Omicron lightly and are continuing with aggressive infection prevention protocols. We realize it is an inconvenience at times, but a necessary one to ensure the safety of all. We also have received the mandate that everyone be boosted by February 1, 2021.

Please feel free to reach out with any questions.

We have been in collaboration with the LA County Department of Public Health, and have initiated Response Testing, where all staff and residents are tested and have not received any further positive results. No residents are symptomatic at this time, and we will continue to monitor. We continue to do our utmost in following the infection prevention protocols to mitigate any positives within our community from the new Delta Variant.

I hope this finds you well and safe. I am writing as an update of the current Covid-19 status in the facility. As part of our measures to slow the spread of infection, all residents are tested weekly and staff has been tested twice a week. Since the recent outbreak began at the beginning of December, there have been 12 staff members who have tested positive, and 6 residents. The Residents have been moved to our Covid “Red Zone”, and employees will quarantine for 14 days at home.

During this time of weather changes and influenza season, we are seeing numbers rise in LA County. We have increased our infection control measures facility-wide and will continue following the guidance of our partners at the state and local level of the Department of Public Health.

We understand this is a difficult time, and we will work our best to ensure you are connected to your loved ones as much as possible. During this time, in-facility visitation remains prohibited. We also ask for your patience at times, as in order for our brave frontline workers to remain safe and ensure the slow of any spread, it may take longer to get ahold of someone but rest assured we will get back to you.

September 2020

September 30, 2020

Since the COVID-19 pandemic has started, nursing facilities, with the guidance of local and state authorities, have put steps in place to reduce the risk of COVID transmission, whether that be from the possibility of COVID entering the building, or if entered, from reducing and preventing the spread.

One of those systems has been the weekly testing of a percentage of staff and residents. Since we began the weekly testing, we have had negative results across the board. Yesterday we received one positive result of a staff member. In addition, we learned a staff member received a positive result from another facility they work at. It is worth noting that both employees work at the same other building, where there has been COVID activity.

We have reported to the Los Angeles Department of Public Health, and are following their guidance. We are conducting enhanced precautions in the facility. Neither employee will be working at the facility for at least the 10 day period that has been mandated by health authorities.

Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions. The safety of your loved ones is our highest priority, and we will do all we can to ensure we become COVID free, as we have been for months, as soon as possible.

July 2020

July 13, 2020

We wanted to provide an update on the Facility as it relates to COVID-19. Since the last update, there were several admissions, but we graduated the last confirmed case of COVID-19 from our Unit 19 on July 2, 2020. We thoroughly cleaned the entire hallway, rooms, and all equipment used in Unit 19, and our plan is to reduce the number of dedicated beds for COVID patients.

Currently, we do not have any confirmed cases of Covid-19 in our building. We do have one resident that we are treating as COVID +, even though the hospital Infection Disease doctor labeled the Resident’s test as a “false positive”, to ensure we are taking the utmost precautions when it comes to infection prevention.

Staff are getting tested at least monthly, and we tested several residents each week. We continue with work with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health vigilantly during this time. We know it can be difficult under the current circumstances to not be able to have the same access to your dearest loved ones. We are committed to doing whatever we can to keep the connection between you both.

We are continuing to update for any new admissions into our COVID + unit, Unit 19. We have had 1 new admission in the last 24 hours. They continue to remain separate from the rest of the building, and the facility continues to follow guidelines to protect all residents and staff.

Sunray Healthcare Center recently partnered with Los Angeles County Public Health in an effort to provide care to the most vulnerable community during this pandemic. As such, Sunray is now a dedicated COVID-19 facility. Essentially, this means that Sunray is able to accept vulnerable patients who are COVID+ from an acute care hospital and provide the care they need as well as the non-COVID+ patients.

Sunray has designated a COVID + unit that is separated from the remainder of the facility, with a dedicated staff and designated equipment, along with a barrier to the rest of the Facility and separate entrance as permitted.

By accepting these COVID+ patients it frees up hospital beds across Southern California that are desperately needed for those in dire need. With that being said, Sunray has now begun to accept COVID+ patients.

For this week, 3 COVID+ patients have been accepted at Sunray in the past day.

Know that we continue to monitor all staff members before and after each shift for signs and symptoms of COVID, including taking each person’s temperature. We are adhering to the infection control guidelines as outlined by public health.

May 8, 2020

This week, Sunray was able to do facility-wide Covid-19 testing for residents and staff. Those test results show that we have five additional COVID-positive residents and one additional COVID-positive staff member. We have been actively partnering with our community hospitals to readmit our COVID-positive residents back to the facility in a safe manner and in coordination with the local health department. All COVID-positive residents are under strict isolation protocols. As of today, we have 10 COVID-positive residents in-house and 8 COVID-positive staff.

Know that we continue to monitor all staff members before and after each shift for signs and symptoms of COVID, including taking each person’s temperature. We are adhering to the infection control guidelines as outlined by public health.
